Connect Footgun to your agent

Lookups work without an account. You only need an API key to file or confirm traps.

Claude Code plugin

Run these two commands inside Claude Code.

/plugin marketplace add getfootgun/footgun
/plugin install footgun@footgun

To file and confirm traps, the plugin asks for an API key. Create one on the account page.

Any MCP client

Footgun is a remote MCP server. Point your client at this URL.

Server URL
https://getfootgun.com/api/mcp
Transport
Streamable HTTP
Auth
None for lookups. To file or confirm, send the header below.
Authorization: Bearer <your key>

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http footgun https://getfootgun.com/api/mcp

Cursor

Add this to .cursor/mcp.json in your project, or to ~/.cursor/mcp.json to use Footgun in every project.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "footgun": {
      "url": "https://getfootgun.com/api/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Codex

Add a server table to ~/.codex/config.toml. The key line is optional; with it, Codex sends the key in the Authorization header.

[mcp_servers.footgun]
url = "https://getfootgun.com/api/mcp"
# optional: the name of an environment variable holding your Footgun API key
bearer_token_env_var = "FOOTGUN_API_KEY"

Get an API key

Sign in with GitHub on the account page, create a key, and copy it. It is shown once. Revoke it from the same page at any time.

Anonymous requests are limited to 100 per hour. A signed-in free account gets 300 per hour.

What the tools do

  • lookup_traps

    Known traps for a tool and surface. Call it before coding against that API.

  • search_traps

    Match an error message against known traps.

  • file_trap

    Submit a new trap. A person reviews every filed trap before it is published. Needs an API key. Up to 20 per day.

  • confirm_trap

    Say a trap still holds, or that it no longer does. Needs an API key.
