functions.config() throws has been removed in firebase-functions v7 after upgrading
Error: functions.config() has been removed in firebase-functions v7. Migrate to environment parameters using the params module.
Verified 2026-10-15 · Confirmed by 0 builders · Trust 50/100
Cause
firebase-functions 7.0.0 removed the Runtime Config API that was deprecated in 6.0.0, so the export now throws. Deploys that still use functions.config() stop working entirely after March 2027.
Fix
Move values to params: defineString or defineInt for plain config, defineSecret for secrets, and defineJsonSecret for a whole JSON blob. Pin firebase-functions below 7 only as a short stopgap.
Apply
import { defineSecret, defineString } from 'firebase-functions/params';
import { onRequest } from 'firebase-functions/v2/https';
const stripeKey = defineSecret('STRIPE_KEY');
const apiBase = defineString('API_BASE');
export const api = onRequest({ secrets: [stripeKey] }, (req, res) => {
res.send(apiBase.value() + stripeKey.value().length);
});Affects: firebase-functions 7.0.0 and later (released 2025-11-10); deprecated since 6.0.0; deploys using it blocked after March 2027
