n8n binary files go missing between nodes in queue mode or after upgrading to 2.0

A worker cannot read a binary file written by another process in queue mode

Verified 2026-10-15 · Confirmed by 0 builders · Trust 50/100

Cause

Filesystem binary storage is local to one machine, so it does not work across queue mode workers. In 2.0 the in-memory default mode was removed, leaving filesystem for regular mode, database for queue mode, and s3.

Fix

In queue mode use database or S3 binary storage, and in regular mode budget disk for the filesystem default.

Apply

EXECUTIONS_MODE=queue
N8N_DEFAULT_BINARY_DATA_MODE=database # or s3 with external storage configured

Affects: Self-hosted n8n queue mode, all versions; default-mode removal in n8n 2.0
