n8n parent workflow receives the sub-workflow input instead of its result when the child has a Wait node
Execute Workflow node output equals the data passed in
Verified 2026-10-15 · Confirmed by 0 builders · Trust 50/100
Cause
In 1.x, when a child went into a waiting state (Wait over 65 seconds, webhook, form or human approval), the parent continued with the child input. n8n 2.0 changed this so the parent gets the child final output.
Fix
On 1.x store the child result in a data store and read it later, or avoid long waits in children. On 2.x review parents that relied on the old behavior.
Apply
Child workflow: after the Wait node, write the result to a Data Table keyed by execution id; parent reads it back
Affects: n8n 1.x (old behavior) and 2.0 and later (new behavior)
