MCP server log messages stop reaching the client after moving to protocol 2026-07-28

notifications/message from the server no longer appear in the client

Verified 2026-10-15 · Confirmed by 0 builders · Trust 50/100

Cause

2026-07-28 removes logging/setLevel and ping. A log level now travels per request in _meta as io.modelcontextprotocol/logLevel, and servers must not emit notifications/message for requests without it; the Logging feature itself is deprecated.

Fix

Send io.modelcontextprotocol/logLevel in each request's _meta when you want logs, and keep stderr or your own log pipeline as the main record.

Apply

{ "method": "tools/call", "params": { "name": "sync", "_meta": { "io.modelcontextprotocol/logLevel": "info" } } }

Affects: MCP protocol 2026-07-28
