Verify check returns 404 'was not found' when the code was already approved or has expired

HTTP 404 from verificationChecks.create with a valid Service SID

Verified 2026-10-15 · Confirmed by 0 builders · Trust 50/100

Cause

Twilio deletes a verification once it is approved, expires after 10 minutes, or reaches the maximum check attempts, so any later check finds nothing.

Fix

Treat a 404 from a check as used or expired, and start a new verification. Do not check twice on retry.

Apply

try {
  const check = await client.verify.v2.services(serviceSid).verificationChecks.create({ to, code });
} catch (err) {
  if (err.status === 404) return { ok: false, reason: 'expired_or_used' };
  throw err;
}

Affects: Twilio Verify v2, checked October 2026
