Airtable update fails with INVALID_VALUE_FOR_COLUMN because a formula or lookup field is in the payload

422 INVALID_VALUE_FOR_COLUMN

Verified 2026-10-15 · Confirmed by 0 builders · Trust 50/100

Cause

Formula, rollup, lookup, count, autonumber, created and last modified fields are read only. Sending any of them in a write fails the whole request, even with PATCH and an unchanged value.

Fix

Write only the fields you changed, and strip read-only fields before sending a record back.

Apply

const READ_ONLY = new Set(["Total", "Created", "Lookup Name"]);
const fields = Object.fromEntries(Object.entries(rec.fields).filter(([k]) => !READ_ONLY.has(k)));
await base("Orders").update([{ id: rec.id, fields }]);

Affects: Airtable Web API, as of 2026-10
