Auto mode behind an LLM gateway or with telemetry off now asks or denies calls instead of using the built-in classifier

Symptom

Auto mode prompts for or refuses tool calls that used to run unattended after upgrading to 2.1.319Setups with telemetry or feature flags off, or behind an LLM gateway, no longer fall back to the built-in classifier/status may show 'Auto mode server: Enabled' misleadingly on older versions even though the gateway drops the review

Cause

From 2.1.319, when telemetry or feature flags are off (including behind LLM gateways), calls the server cannot check are asked about or denied, with no fallback to the built-in classifier. Bedrock, Vertex and Foundry are unchanged.

Fix

Set CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_SERVER=0 to keep using the built-in classifier. If you want the server-side check behind a gateway and have CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_EXPERIMENTAL_BETAS set, set CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_SERVER=1 as well, and in managed settings put the 1 there too.
