Airtable breaking changes, updated weekly

Every verified Airtable trap in Footgun: changes and behaviors that break code or give wrong results, newest first. Each one has the error you see, the fix, and the date it was last checked.    Airtable update wipes every field that was not in the request

   Symptom

   Other fields on the record are blank after an update

   Fix

   Use PATCH (update() in airtable.js) for partial changes, and reserve PUT for writes that send the full record.

   Airtable API calls are blocked or slowed to 2 per second partway through the month

   Symptom

   Every request returns 429 until the workspace is upgraded or the monthly counter resets (Free plan, after the grace period)

   Fix

   Count calls per month, cache reads, batch writes to 10 records per call, and move heavy integrations to a plan with a higher allowance.

   Airtable API returns 401 for an integration that still authenticates with a legacy API key

   Symptom

   401 Unauthorized on every request made with a key that starts with key

   Fix

   Create a personal access token with the scopes and bases the integration needs and put it where the old key was. Use OAuth for integrations that act for other users.

   Airtable attachment URLs saved in another system break a few hours later

   Symptom

   Images stored from the API return an error after about two hours

   Fix

   Download the file when you read the record and store it in your own storage, or read the record again right before showing the file.

   Airtable create or update with more than 10 records fails with 422

   Symptom

   422 when the records array holds 11 or more items

   Fix

   Chunk record arrays into groups of 10 and send them in sequence to stay inside the per-base rate limit.

   Airtable list records with a long filterByFormula fails once the URL passes 16,000 characters

   Symptom

   Lookup by a list of IDs fails only when the list is long

   Fix

   Send long queries as POST to the listRecords path with the parameters in the JSON body, or split the ID list into smaller groups.

   Airtable paging fails with LIST_RECORDS_ITERATOR_NOT_AVAILABLE in a slow export loop

   Symptom

   422 LIST_RECORDS_ITERATOR_NOT_AVAILABLE

   Fix

   Fetch all pages first and process afterward, keep the gap between page requests short, and restart the listing from scratch on this error.

   Airtable record is missing a field entirely when the checkbox is false or the cell is empty

   Symptom

   record.fields.Done is undefined instead of false

   Fix

   Default every field you read, and get the real column list from the base schema endpoint instead of from returned rows.

   Airtable returns 403 INVALID_PERMISSIONS_OR_MODEL_NOT_FOUND with a valid personal access token

   Symptom

   403 INVALID_PERMISSIONS_OR_MODEL_NOT_FOUND

   Fix

   Edit the token, add the base under Access and the needed scopes, and confirm the creator has editor access. On Enterprise, check whether admins block API access to organization-owned bases.

    Airtable returns 429 and then keeps failing for 30 seconds after a burst of requests to one base

    Symptom

    429 RATE_LIMIT_REACHED

    Fix

    Queue requests per base at 5 per second or fewer, batch writes 10 records at a time, and wait at least 30 seconds after a 429 before retrying.

    Airtable update fails with INVALID_VALUE_FOR_COLUMN because a formula or lookup field is in the payload

    Symptom

    422 INVALID_VALUE_FOR_COLUMN

    Fix

    Write only the fields you changed, and strip read-only fields before sending a record back.

    Airtable webhook stops sending notifications after seven days with no error

    Symptom

    Notification pings stop exactly one week after the webhook was created

    Fix

    Call list webhook payloads on every ping (which also extends the webhook) and run a daily refresh call as a backstop. Store the cursor between calls.

    Renaming an Airtable field breaks integration code that reads fields by name

    Symptom

    Field silently reads as undefined after someone renames a column

    Fix

    Read and write by field ID. In airtable.js, use select() with returnFieldsByFieldId, or call base.makeRequest for single-record reads.

    Fix

    Pass typecast true when the integration may send new option values, or normalize values to the existing option list first.
